Whether you’ve been preparing for the loss of your dog or cat for a while or you need to suddenly decide on euthanasia, there’s no easy way to say goodbye. Our veterinary team can support you in making the best decision, considering your dog or cat’s quality of life and your family’s well-being.

How is euthanasia performed?

We perform euthanasia procedures by administering a fast-acting solution that peacefully ends your dog or cat’s life in a few moments. To ensure they’re as calm and relaxed as possible, we start by administering a sedative. It can usually take a few moments before your dog or cat feels the sedative’s effects, which makes them unconscious. Next, we’ll administer the euthanasia medication, which instantaneously stops your dog or cat’s heartbeat and brain activity. The procedure is designed to ensure they feel as little pain as possible and can peacefully transition.

How do I cope with euthanizing my dog or cat?

Our veterinary team empathizes with you as you grieve the loss of your dog or cat. We will support you during every step of the process. Before you make your final decision, we’ll review your dog or cat’s medical records and explore the options based on their conditions. If they’re experiencing low quality of life, meaning their illness or health status is negatively affecting their well-being, we could recommend euthanasia. However, the final decision is ultimately up to you and your family. If you’re having difficulty processing the loss of your beloved dog or cat after the procedure, we can recommend grief support.

What arrangements do I need to make after the procedure?

Before your dog or cat’s appointment, we’ll discuss what you’d like to do with their remains. We can support you in making arrangements for burial or cremation. You could also have a keepsake like a pawprint or other items created to memorialize your dog or cat. To learn more about euthanasia, please contact us at 613-247-0013.
